    TLDR

    • Vitalik Buterin transferred 50.25 ETH worth about $113,000 through Privacy Pools on the Ethereum mainnet.
    • The transfer followed the March 31, 2025, mainnet launch of Privacy Pools by 0xbow.io.
    • Privacy Pools uses zero-knowledge proofs to verify withdrawals from approved association sets.
    • The protocol limits initial deposits to 1 ETH per address to manage compliance risk.
    • The team can pause new association sets if sanctions or AML concerns arise.
    • More than 21 ETH across 69 deposits entered the protocol during its launch week.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin moved 50.25 ETH, worth about $113,000, through Privacy Pools on mainnet. He executed the transfer weeks after 0xbow.io launched the protocol on March 31, 2025. The transaction publicly demonstrated the compliance-focused privacy tool with real capital.

Vitalik Buterin Executes 50.25 ETH Transfer Through Privacy Pools

Vitalik Buterin sent 50.25 ETH through Privacy Pools and recorded the transfer on the Ethereum mainnet. The amount equaled about $113,000 at current market prices. He completed the move after 0xbow.io activated the protocol on March 31, 2025.

The transfer followed the release of a 2023 research paper that Buterin co-authored. The paper outlined a compliance-aware privacy framework using zero-knowledge proofs. His action shifted the proposal from theory to operational use.

0xbow.io launched Privacy Pools with backing from Number Group, BanklessVC, Public Works, and Coinbase Ventures. The team positioned the protocol as a bridge between user privacy and AML standards. They introduced operational limits to address regulatory concerns.

The launch data showed more than 21 ETH deposited across 69 transactions during the first week. Buterin’s transaction entered that early pool. The anonymity set remains limited but continues to expand.

Protocol Design Targets Selective Disclosure Compliance

Privacy Pools uses zero-knowledge proofs to verify withdrawals from approved association sets. Users prove that their funds belong to curated deposits without revealing their exact transactions. The protocol encodes off-chain analysis results on-chain for verification.

The system differs from Tornado Cash, which mixed deposits without filtering. OFAC sanctioned Tornado Cash in August 2022 after regulators linked it to illicit activity. Privacy Pools introduces selective association sets from the outset.

0xbow.io capped initial deposits at 1 ETH per address to manage risk. The team also retained authority to pause new association sets if AML issues appear. However, the protocol keeps withdrawal permissionless once deposits enter approved pools.

The white paper states that regulators could request proof from approved association sets. It argues that authorities could review targeted evidence instead of full transaction histories. The framework seeks to balance privacy and compliance through cryptographic proofs.

Lawmakers continue reviewing digital asset legislation under the CLARITY Act, which faces over 100 amendments. The debate includes how regulators classify privacy-focused tools. OFAC’s approach will influence how agencies treat selective-disclosure mechanisms.

0xbow plans to expand support to ERC-20 tokens in future updates. The roadmap also includes wallet integrations and compliance dashboard tools. The team confirmed these development goals following the mainnet launch.
